Walks in Yorkshire

Walk through Stockeld estate just on the boarder of North and West Yorkshire, where Christmas trees roam the hillside in search of presents.

Start) Village hall in Spofforth click Here to get directions on Google Maps

1) As you look at the village hall follow the road behind the hall up the hill and continue on the road around to the right passing the village school on your right and keep following the road down the hill towards the cricket club.

2) At the bottom of the hill there is a stile, go over it and head towards the farm track. continue on the track towards the stone wall at the other end of the field. Follow the wall until you reach a stile in the wall. Go over the stile and turn right, follow the path for a short distance until you reach a left turn. Take the left track, and continue on this track until you reach a bridge and a metal gate (often left open).

3) Follow the track straight all the way to the top, the road will take a 90 degree turn to the right passing a row of trees on the left. continue on the track a short way until you are looking over a field. Follow the path to the left around the edge of the field to the open gate with a security camera pole, pass through the gate.

4) Continue walking directly away from the gate, you will pass a livestock field on the left. Continue down the road until it takes another 90 degree right turn, this is where you leave the road. On the left hand side of the bend is a gate and a stile. Go over the stile and follow the fence to the right around the edge of the livestock field until you reach another stile on your right and go over it.

5) Passing horse fields either side of the path you’ll reach a gate, go through the gate up a small incline and past the stables on your right. Follow the path up towards the houses, noticing the treehouse lodged in the tree to your right. Just before you reach the houses there is a gate on your left for the Public, follow the path around the back of the barn and through to the Scott’s Arms Pub car park.

7) Once you’ve enjoyed your drink or meal you likely wont want to walk back, however, good things always have to come to an end. Walking out of the pub entrance turn left to the main road, it goes without saying, becareful crossing as you can’t always see what’s coming down the hill. Once on the footpath at the other side, follow it down the hill until you get to the old church, you should now be able to cross the road again to the other pavement, stay on the pavement, passing the Sicklinghall village hall on your left and continue on passing a pond and a few benches on the left. Just past the pond a short way the road splits, take the left road and follow it down a fair way continue past the gatehouse on your right, and to the metal gate, there is a small opening on the right hand side for walkers to pass around.

8) Walk up the steep hill and continue until you see a turning on your left hand side. Turn down this path, follow the straight track all the way down to the edge of an old disused quarry, following the track around to the right, ignoring the stile on the left, and continuing until you reach a metal gate.

9) Pass through the gate and continue down the track, passing through another gate at the other side of the field. Keep on this track watching out for livestock, until you reach a cattle grid, pass over the cattle grid (gate to the right), and follow on the footpath down to the left.

10) You are now next to the main road, follow this road all the way through the village down to the mini roundabout, the Castle Inn and Village shop should be to your left, continue passed the shop, up the hill, passing the old post office on your left, the Village Hall should now be in view, continue to the carpark.
